The Poás Volcano Will Reopen To The Public in August

Authorities of the Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación (Sinac) – National System of Conservation Areas – showed legislator and former mayor of Alajuela, Roberto Thompson, a work schedule in which they affirm the reopening of the Poás Volcano National Park in the third week of August.

Thompson had expressed concern about the difficult socio-economic situation that residents and merchants of the Poas and surrounding areas have been living due to the closure of the park.

The legislator has proposed the approval of a law that would allocate 10% of the park entrance fee to the Poas municipality, to used in the development of strategies, programs, and projects that promote sustainable, inclusive, participatory development and promote tourist attraction to the Poas area.

“I am committed to supporting the development of the Poás canton, it has enormous potential in different areas that deserves our full support from the Legislative Assembly,” said the legislator.

“We will be from my office giving follow-up to this issue and supporting the inhabitants of these communities, very attentive to the actions of the government authorities and the fulfillment of the commitments they have assumed for the early reopening,” said the liberationist.

Before the closure in April 2017, the Poas national park entrance fee was ¢1,000 colones for nationals and US$15 for foreigners.
