Scientists warn that seismic swarms may unleash earthquakes of up to 6° in the center of Costa Rica. There are 19 seismic areas in the Central Valley. There is a strong risk that tremors shake buildings, schools and hospitals.
Seismic swarms were recorded last year in the Los Santos area. Additionally, there was a tremor of four degrees that affected Santa Ana, Escazú and Acosta, bringing to light the possibility of major earthquakes in populated areas.
Another fact that piqued the interest of scientists last year is that 413 microsismos (up to 3.5 degrees) were registered in Cartago just between December 1st and 11th. The area has several faults that are not well identified because of how close they are to each other.
